Health Insurance Coverage During the Summer for Academic Year 10-Month Employees
Employees with an Academic Year appointment, also referred to as “10-month employees,” can be assured that although they may not work during the summer months, they are protected by their medical, dental, and prescription drug coverage. Ten-month employees with an academic year appointment from September 1st through June 30th, who are currently enrolled in a medical and/or dental plan, are eligible to maintain benefits through the summer months of July and August. However, since, most ten-month employees do not receive pay during July and August special measures are taken by to ensure that ten-month employees maintain their health insurance and proper payroll deductions are taken. If you have an Academic Year appointment ending on June 30 and are enrolled in medical and/or prescription coverage, the coverage will continue during the months of July and August without deductions. If you are enrolled in a dental plan, you will have a double dental deductions taken in February (2/3 and 2/17) and March (3/2 and 3/16) paychecks for dental coverage for the months of July and August. Your health deductions will resume in September. If you are not reappointed in the fall, your coverage will terminate effective 9/1/12. If you are not reappointed, your department must process your termination in the HCM system to ensure that a COBRA notification is sent to you.
Preventive Services, Immunizations and Certain Screenings Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation (HCR) Acts
Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation (HCR) Acts, certain preventive care, such as immunizations (age and population restrictions may apply), certain screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, newborn, etc.), FDA-approved contraceptive methods, and well-baby care, will be covered by all of the SHBP medical plans without member cost sharing.
As a result, primary care well visits (annual exams) will no longer require a copayment or coinsurance by the member for certain wellness services provided by an in-network provider. However, if the preventive service is not the primary reason for the office visit, the member may still be responsible for a copayment or coinsurance. Contact your medical provider or plan for more information.
Prescription Drug Coverage for Medicare Eligible Retirees
Effective January 1, 2012, retiree and/or covered spouses and partners covered under the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) retiree prescription program who are eligible for Medicare will be automatically enrolled in Medco Medicare Prescription Plan (PDP). Medco Health Solutions, Inc. will remain the prescription drug plan administrator for SHBP retirees and their prescription coverage. No action is required by the retiree, as the SHBP will automatically enroll eligible retirees into both Medicare Part B and the Medco Medicare Prescription Plan (PDP).
Retirees will continue to pay the appropriate copayment for either retail or mail order prescriptions. Enrollment into the new plan does not affect coverage under Medicare Part A and/or Part B, however, all retirees belonging to the SHBP who are eligible for Medicare must enroll in and maintain both Medicare Part A and Part B. Retirees currently being reimbursed for Medicare B premiums by the SHBP will also be reimbursed for any Medicare Part D premiums.
It is important to note that is if a retiree decides not to be enrolled in this Plan, the retiree will lose prescription drug benefits provided by the SHBP. However, the medical benefits will continue.
