Returning To Work at Rutgers
Rutgers is a great place to work, and after retiring you may decide to return to Rutgers. You can view available positions on our website. If you are not looking for full-time employment, you may want to consider a temporary job opportunity.
Should you decide to return to work at Rutgers after retiring, it is important to understand how your retiree benefits may be affected. Please note that there should be at least a one month break (30 calendar days) between your retirement date and re-employment date.

What happens to health insurance when |
If you are eligible for SHBP coverage based on your second retirement, the Division of Pensions and Benefits will send you an offering letter and enrollment application. If your previous coverage was state paid, attach a note to the application indicating the previous coverage. If your second retirement is not eligible, you must write the Division to have your retired coverage reinstated. |
If you chose to enroll in active-status State Health benefits while re-employed as a full-time employee, you must contact the Division of Pensions and Benefits to have your retired coverage reinstated upon your separation. |
Monthly Pension Benefit and Survivor Benefits |
The primary consequence of re-enrolling in PERS is the cancellation of your monthly pension benefit including any survivor benefits that may be payable at your death. |

What happens to monthly pension benefits when I retire again? |
Once you retire again, the death benefits associated with your first retirement become effective. If you die during your second membership in PERS, no survivor benefits from the previous retirement or membership are payable, other than your return of your contributions not used to pay your retirement allowance. |
Not applicable |
Life Insurance |
If you are over age 60 when you re-enroll, you will be required to prove insurability through a physical examination before you will be covered by the group life insurance benefits as an active member. |
You are ineligible for employer-paid life insurance, since re-enrollment in ABP is not permitted for retirees. Retiree life insurance benefits are not affected. |
What happens to life insurance when I retire again? |
Once you retire again, your eligibility for retiree life insurance will be recalculated based on years of pension credited service and the previous 12 months salary. If you die during your second membership in PERS, your life insurance benefit is the active member policy (if you are covered under the active plan). |
