Sick Time and Sick Leave
About Sick Time for Care of Self
Sick time is a necessary period of absence because of illness that requires you to be absent from work.
About Sick Leave for Care of Others
Sick Leave is a period of time that you are unable
to work as a result of having to provide emergency attendance
to a member of your immediate family who is seriously ill. A maximum limit of Sick Leave days are allowed per fiscal year (refer to your specific Collective Negotiations Agreement or the University Policy for MPSC employees for applicable number of allowable days). This time is not
to be used to provide ongoing nursing care, emotional support,
babysitting, running errands, or the like. Such time must
be charged to Vacation, Administrative Leave, or Personal
Holiday.
"Care of a Seriously Ill Family Member" is the employee's attendance at a hospital, health care facility, or at home, or transport to medical treatment, when certified by a health care provider. It does not cover matters unrelated to medical needs such as babysitting, running errands, and/or running a business for the family member while he/she is ill; for these purposes, the appropriate charge is vacation, administrative leave, personal holiday, or leave without pay.
