Harassment - Information For Staff

Rutgers University encourages and promotes an environment in which every employee is treated with dignity and respect irrespective of background, belief or culture. The university is committed to maintaining a diverse working environment free from harassment related to an individual’s race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, and marital or veteran status.

Members of the university community who feel that may have been subjected to harassment can discuss their concerns, without fear or reprisal, with any of the Harassment Advisers, who can offer advice and assistance. The university’s Policy Prohibiting Harassment provides for informal and formal processes of resolving complaints. A full description of the complaint process can be found in the Harassment Complaint Process. Any questions or concerns should be directed to a Harassment Adviser or the Office of Employment Equity.

All managers, supervisors, and employees are reminded that harassment interferes with a productive working environment, interjects irrelevant considerations into personnel decisions, and generally demeans the victims of harassment. Employees in positions of authority have a responsibility to take action when he or she knows of a harassing situation. If someone comes to you with a complaint of harassment:

  1. Get the facts
  2. Document the conversation
  3. Suggest the complainant speak with a Harassment Adviser who is trained in handling complaints
  4. Ask the person how you might be helpful
  5. Reassure that retaliation against the complainant constitutes a violation of the policy and is not tolerated
  6. Call the Office of Employment Equity for advice
