- Are there guidelines regarding how employees may be selected for layoff?
- Yes. Refer to the layoff guidelines published on our website for related information.
- The guidelines suggest departments should consider using 10-month appointments to meet the required budget reductions. Why must July and August be the two months off the payroll?
-
The Division of Pension and Benefits only recognizes September 1st to June 30th as a 10-month appointment for benefits to be maintained.
- How do I inform my employee that he or she will be laid off?
-
Meet with your employee and provide him or her with a written notice specifying the terms of the layoff. Please contact your assigned HR Consultant for guidance and assistance with this process if you are laying off a nonaligned employee. If you are laying off a union employee, contact the Office of Labor Relations at 732-932-3020, ext. 4040.
- How will the university assist laid off employees?
- University Human Resources, along with the campus human resources offices in Newark and Camden, will provide information and services to assist laid off employees. Workshops on interviewing, resume writing, career planning, and job search strategies will be offered, as well as easy-to-access resources to research and pursue available employment opportunities.
Staff from the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program will provide confidential counseling services to those employees who are affected by the layoff.
- Representatives from the Department of Labor will be on campus to explain services and training opportunities, and will assist with expediting the processing of unemployment claims.
- I want to hire a laid off employee, but I am unable to pay the salary he/she is currently making due to my own budget constraints. Can I pay this employee a lower salary?
- Departments are expected to compensate employees according to university compensation policy or the applicable collective negotiations agreement. Please contact the Office of Labor Relations at 732-932-3020, ext. 4040, or University Human Resources Compensation and Staffing at 732-932-3020, ext. 4086, to discuss your specific situation.
- Do I have to hire an employee who is seeking to "bump" one of my current union employees?
- Yes, provided the individual has the requisite qualifications and abilities to perform the job responsibilities of the position.
