FAQ - Paid Time Off

  1. I am a full-time 12-month NL employee.  My hire date is November 15, 1985.   How many vacation days am I entitled to receive on July 1, 2005?

    • On July 1, 2005 you are entitled to receive 23 vacation days to be used during the fiscal year.
    • From July 2004 through November 2004, you accrue 8.3 days
      (5 months x 1.66 = 8.3 days).
    • From December 2004 through June 2005 you accrue 2.1 days
      (7 months x 2.1 = 14.7 days).

  2. I was a full-time fixed workweek (37–1/2) employee until my position changed to part-time 60% on May 1st.  I was hired two years ago. How many vacation days will I have July 1st?

    You will have have 14.0 days. (10 months at full-time rate x 1.25 x 10 = 12.5 days, plus 2  months at PT rate 1.25 x .60 = 1.5)

  3. I am a full-time 12-month employee hired December 1, 2004.  How many vacation days will I receive on July 1, 2005?

    You will receive 7 days.  New employees accrue vacation at a rate of one day per month for the remainder of the fiscal year in which they were hired.

  4. Can I carry over unused AL or PH days into the next fiscal year?

    No, AL and PH days granted July 1st must be used by the following June 30th.

  5. Can I carry over vacation days into the next fiscal year?

    Generally, vacation time is not carried over. However, if the employee and supervisor mutually agree that the pressure of work or special circumstances make if difficult to use all of the vacation days, then carry over is allowed.  No more than one year’s vacation can be carried over.  Vacation carryover must be noted on the Staff Absence Record card and noting supervisory approval.  Additionally, the card must also be certified by the appropriate University officer.

  6. If I leave the University and am rehired in the future will I be able to use the balance of sick days I had when I left?

    Yes, remaining balance may be used while employed with the University, but they will not be used in calculating sick leave payout at retirement.  Contact University Human Resources to request a verification letter to be sent to your department. 

  7. I am a full-time recently hired employee who belongs to AFSCME.  At what rate do I accrue sick days?

    AFSCME employees hired on or after July 1, 2000 earn sick leave at the rate of one day per month of service. Always refer to the appropriate Collective Negotiations Agreement for any variations or additional details concerning university policy on sick time.

  8. If I terminate employment, will I receive payment for unused vacation, AL, PH or sick leave days?

    A lump-sum payment for unused and accrued vacation days is made by the University at the time of separation.  AL, PH and sick days are not paid out.
