FAQ - Health Insurance for Teaching/Graduate Assistants with Less Than a Full-time Appointment

  1. What health insurance coverage is available for Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who hold less than a full-time appointment?

    Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who hold less than a full-time appointment are eligible to participate in the Rutgers University Graduate Fellows Student Health Insurance Plan.

  2. Where can I find a list of participating physicians for the Graduate Fellow Health Plan?

    Consult the online listing of participating Aetna physicians.

    From the “DocFind Provider Directory,” you may search by location, provider type, or physician name. Under “Select a Plan,” indicate “Aetna Standard Plans,” then select “Open Choice PPO." When the list of doctors appears, you can click on “provider detail” to get physician background information. Enrolled members can access Aetna Navigator, a secure member website, to obtain personalized benefits information.

  3. Who pays for health insurance coverage for Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who hold less than a full-time appointment?

    Single insurance coverage for the employee only is paid for by the university.

  4. Can Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who hold less than a full-time appointment enroll dependents in health insurance?

    Yes. Eligible dependents include the Teaching or Graduate Assistant’s spouse or same-sex civil union or domestic partner; and unmarried children who are under age 19 if not attending school, through age 23 if a full-time undergraduate student, or though age 25 if a full-time graduate student.

    Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who wish to enroll eligible dependents in the health insurance are responsible for the corresponding premium cost.   5. Are dental benefits available to Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who hold less than a full-time appointment?

    No. Dental benefits are only available to full-time Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants.

  6. Is life insurance provided for Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants who hold less than a full-time appointment?

    No. Life insurance benefits are not available.

  7. When the appointment ends, can health insurance be continued through COBRA?

    No. COBRA provisions do not apply with this policy for Teaching and Graduate Assistants with less than a full-time appointment. When coverage ends, enrolled individuals can contact Aetna directly at 1-800-435-8742 to request conversion to a private policy called the Aetna Individual Advantage Plan.

  8. If a Teaching Assistant or Graduate Assistant accepts a full-time position at Rutgers, is there a waiting period for State Health Benefits to become effective?

    Yes. The individual is considered a new employee subject to a 60-day benefits waiting period from the date of hire. There is an exception for ten-month academic year employees appointed from September 1 to June 30. Coverage for these employees becomes effective September 1.
