Re: FY 2014 - 2015 Performance Evaluations for Staff in Legacy UMDNJ Positions

Each year, Rutgers University supervisors must conduct performance evaluations for their employees in order to comply with university policy and collective negotiations agreements.  In accordance with legacy UMDNJ policy 60.9.28, Performance Evaluations (http://policies.rutgers.edu/view-policies/human-resources-hr-%E2%80%93-section-60) and applicable collective negotiations agreements (http://uhr.rutgers.edu/policies-resources/collective-negotiations-agreements), supervisors and managers of staff in legacy UMDNJ positions are responsible for providing a formal performance evaluation to eligible union and non-union employees on an annual basis. These performance management processes allow managers and employees to engage in a thoughtful dialogue about the year’s performance and accomplishments, and to define goals and objectives for the coming performance cycle.

Please note the following guidelines to assist supervisors in the completion of the performance appraisal process:

  • The appraisal period for this review cycle begins July 1, 2013 and extends to June 30, 2014.
  • Supervisors must complete annual performance evaluations and notify employees of their appraisal results. To assist with this process, the Legacy UMDNJ Staff Performance Review Table outlines for managers and supervisors the various staff employee groups for whom performance appraisals must be completed, the review dates when appraisals should be finalized, and the appropriate appraisal form to use.  This table is available from the Performance Management for Legacy UMDNJ Positions webpage at: http://uhr.rutgers.edu/uhr-units-offices/consulting-staffing-compensation/performance-management/performance-management.
  • Please note that for this review cycle covering the July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 appraisal period, the due date of performance appraisals for non-union staff has been extended to September 30, 2014, in order to provide sufficient time in completing the employee evaluations.
  • The performance appraisal forms for use in evaluating legacy UMDNJ employees may be accessed from the UHR Forms webpage, under Performance Appraisal Forms, at http://uhr.rutgers.edu/policies-resources/forms/performance-appraisal-forms
  • Completed performance evaluations must be signed by the appraised employees and multiple levels of supervisors as required. The signed appraisal forms must be forwarded to Human Resources Data Administration at University Human Resources (UHR), Administrative Services Building II, Cook Campus.  You may contact Data Administration at (848) 932-3906 with any questions.  Please retain copies for your records.
  • Supervisors may also take advantage of attending information sessions regarding performance management offered by the UHR Learning and Development Office.  Courses are offered throughout the year, with the next course on Understanding the Performance Management Process to be held on August 28 at Liberty Plaza, 335 George Street, New Brunswick, NJ.  To register please contact the Learning and Development Office at (732) 235-9500. The full schedule of course offerings will be forthcoming and posted on the UHR website.

Supervisors may also access performance management information, tools and resources at the Performance Management for Legacy UMDNJ Positions webpage at: http://uhr.rutgers.edu/uhr-units-offices/consulting-staffing-compensation/performance-management/performance-management.

NOTE TO SUPERVISORS IN LEGACY RUTGERS POSITIONS – If you supervise legacy UMDNJ employees who are covered by these appraisal processes, you must evaluate eligible employees using the corresponding appraisal tools by the timeframe identified in the Legacy UMDNJ Staff Performance Review Table (http://uhr.rutgers.edu/sites/default/files/userfiles/Legacy-UMDNJ-Staff-Performance-Review-Table.pdf).

If you have any questions regarding the performance evaluation processes, please contact the Compensation Services Office at (973) 972-4845.
