HR Liaison Development Program

The HR Liaison Development Program aims to advance the skills and capabilities of Rutgers employees who serve as departmental HR Liaisons. The program emphasizes strategic skills needed to help create and sustain effective organizations and contribute to the university’s goal of improving the university’s service to and reputation among relevant internal and external constituencies.

Program Requirements
Program participants must be nominated by their department or organization leader and commit to attend all nine sessions. Individuals who enroll in the program must attend all courses in order to receive a certificate of completion. Courses are generally held twice monthly over three to four months.

Courses
The program focuses on multiple dimensions of organizational effectiveness including client focus, building credibility and trust, and initiating action. It consists of nine half-day sessions, scheduled every other week. The course format includes lecture, case studies, individual and group activities, discussion, and information sharing. All classes are held in ASB II, Cook Campus. Session topics and descriptions include:

Program Overview: Role and Challenges for the HR Liaison
Broad introduction to the course focusing on the role of the HR Liaison, possibilities for expanding the impact of this role, and the engagement of key strategies in building effectiveness within your organization.

Becoming a Strategic Communicator: The Key to Organizational Effectiveness
Skills to effectively receive and convey information with concern for building positive relationships.

Leadership and Influence: Concepts and Competencies That Make a Difference
Developing vision and being proactive with sensitivity to political, organizational, cultural, and institutional issues.

Building Strategic Relationships
Recognizing the importance of effective relationships in advancing the HR Liaison role.

Planning As an Everyday Activity
Thinking ahead, analyzing, anticipating issues, barriers, and consequences.

Effective Recruitment and Hiring Practices: Getting the Employees You Want
Overview of effective recruitment, interviewing, selection, and orientation processes; how to develop and facilitate a process that can result in an engaged and motivated staff.

Performance Management as a Process
An in-depth look at the components of performance management and a review of the skills necessary for the effective engagement of the process.

Valuing Perspective: Creating an Inclusive Workplace
Examination of the barriers that prevent us from creating an inclusive workplace and strategies for overcoming them; concepts of communication and relationship building in the context of creating a culture of inclusion.

Capstone Session: Putting It all Together
An applied learning opportunity; through a case study and round table discussions, participants identify and solve workplace problems.
