Management Development Program

The Management Development Program aims to advance the skills and capabilities of Rutgers employees who serve as mid- to upper-level managers. The program emphasizes strategic skills needed to help create and sustain effective organizations and contribute to the university’s goal of improving the university’s service to and reputation among relevant internal and external constituencies.

Program Requirements
Program participants are invited to participate in the program based upon their position and prior participation in University Human Resources' developmental programs. Participants are asked to have the support of their immediate supervisor and commit to attend all six sessions. Individuals who enroll in the program must attend all courses in order to receive a certificate of completion. Courses are generally held every three to four weeks.

Courses
The program focuses on multiple dimensions of organizational effectiveness including client focus, building credibility and trust, and initiating action. It consists of six half-day sessions. The course format includes session pre-work, lecture, case studies, individual and group activities, discussion, and information sharing. These are not "nuts-n-bolts" type of courses, but rather courses that focus on broad leadership and management concepts and principles

All classes are held in ASB II, Cook Campus from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Session topics and descriptions include:

Becoming a Strategic Communicator and Leader: The Key to Organizational Effectiveness
This course lays the foundation for the program. Participants will learn about skills to effectively receive and convey information with concern for building positive relationships. Developing vision and being proactive with sensitivity to political, organizational, cultural, and institutional issues will also be covered.

Building Strategic Relationships
In this course participants will recognize the importance of effective relationships in advancing their role as a manager in the department. The facilitator will guide the participants in formulating effective relationship-building strategies.

Planning As an Everyday Activity
Participants will discuss all types of planning in this course. Focus will be placed on thinking ahead, analyzing, anticipating issues, identifying barriers, and addressing consequences. The facilitator will guide the participants in formulating effective planning strategies.

Talent Management Strategies
In this session participants will take an in-depth look at the components of a talent management system and a review of the skills necessary for the effective engagement of the process. Participants will discuss concepts related to talent planning, identification of core competencies, performance management systems, and succession planning.

Valuing Perspective: Creating an Inclusive Workplace
This course will examine the barriers that prevent us from creating an inclusive workplace and strategies for overcoming them. The facilitator will review concepts of communication and relationship building in the context of creating a culture of inclusion.

Capstone Session: Putting It all Together
An applied learning opportunity. Through a case study and round table discussions, participants identify and solve workplace problems. Participants are expected to apply concepts and strategies learned in the program.
