Professional Work Skills Program

The Professional Work Skills Program is a series of four workshops aimed at increasing the interpersonal, communication, and client service skills of university employees. Clerical, office, laboratory, and technical staff such as administrative assistants, unit coordinators, and secretaries, and service and maintenance employees such as group leaders and maintenance mechanics, will find this series especially helpful. Participants who attend all four workshops receive a certificate of completion.

Program Topics

The Basic Principles – a new look at the “Golden Rule”, tips for building interpersonal relationships, and a quick insight into personal style preferences

Effective Communication Techniques – strategies for getting messages across clearly, getting good information from others, and using body language to send positive messages

Managing Conflict With Others – techniques for dealing with difficult situations and people including "I" statements, anticipation, reading meta talk, and setting boundaries

Providing Outstanding Service – an overview of the impact of good and poor service, factors that result in excellent service, and tips for managing difficult service encounters
