Labor Relations Services
The Office of Labor Relations (OLR) provides services to the Rutgers University community in the context of labor relations between the University and its staff employees. Examples of these services are:
Negotiating, administering and interpreting the collectively negotiated agreements with all staff labor unions. If you need assistance in understanding the provisions of a collective agreement, please call OLR.
Assisting supervisors with staff discipline and grievance handling. OLR is available to consult with supervisors who are taking disciplinary action, including termination of employment. OLR also provides guidance to supervisors on how to make presentations at hearings and to conduct hearings during the grievance process.
Serving as the hearing officer in the last internal step in the various formal union grievance procedures and administering the problem solving procedure for administrative assembly-eligible staff. OLR also coordinates the special grievance procedure. OLR representatives hear and answer grievances of staff members. If you are a supervisor or a non-unit-eligible employee and have questions about the grievance process, please call OLR.
Facilitating compliance with certain Federal and State laws related to employment. OLR provides information and guidance on the New Jersey Family Leave Act (NJFLA) and the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). In addition, OLR receives and processes written reports or complaints concerning Conscientious Employee Protection Act (CEPA)-related violations made by employees. Please contact OLR for assistance.
Consulting with employees about incidents of workplace violence. OLR has been designated to assist persons in reporting claims of violence in the workplace. Please see the University Policy Prohibiting Workplace Violence.
