The Supervisor Development Program

The Supervisor Development Program is designed to enhance your knowledge and expertise in three key areas:

  • Establishing Yourself as a Supervisor

  • Managing Employee Performance

  • Creating a Positive Work Environment

The program is outlined as a set of three modules that address key areas. As a participant you will have the opportunity to work with other supervisors and representatives of University Human Resources in a supportive environment to explore and test new ideas and approaches. Large group interaction, case studies, small group discussion, and experiential activities will be used to discuss a broad range of subjects:

Your development as a supervisor does not end with these this series. Ongoing support and resources from your supervisor and from University Human Resources will continue to develop your leadership potential.

Supervisor Development Program IV - Managing Projects and People

Graduates of the three-day Supervisor Development Program may continue to build and reinforce their supervisory knowledge and abilities by attending an additional full-day workshop that focuses on project and people management skills. Through peer networking, case studies, large and small group discussion, and experiential activities, participants will explore:

Administering Basic Projects - includes defining the major aspects of handling any project and project management tools

Handling Multiple Priorities - covers identifying departmental, team, and personal priorities and a variety of time management tools

Managing Conflict - enables recognition of personal conflict management style and learning strategies to handle conflict

Dealing With Difficult Employees and Situations - presents strategies for dealing positively with a diverse workforce and customer base

Graduates of the SDP who have already attended open enrollment workshops in any of these subjects are entitled to full credit for their attendance and need only participate in areas not yet explored.

Professional Works Skills Program

The Professional Work Skills Program is a series of four workshops aimed at increasing the interpersonal, communication, and client service skills of non-supervisory administrative and operations employees. This program is recommended for clerical, office, laboratory, and technical staff such as administrative assistants, unit coordinators, and secretaries. It is also suggested for service and maintenance employees such as group leaders and maintenance mechanics.

Each of the four workshops is two hours long. All workshops will be presented at the University Human Resources Training Center at 27 Road 1, Building 4086 on the Livingston Campus. Participants who attend all four workshops will receive a certificate of completion. Dates for this program in spring 2005 are shown in parentheses below.

Program topics include:

The Basic Principles – a new look at the “Golden Rule”, tips for building interpersonal relationships, and a quick insight into personal style preferences

Effective Communication Techniques – strategies for getting messages across clearly, hints for getting good information from others, and the effective use of body language to send positive messages

Providing Outstanding Service – an overview of the impact of good and poor service, identification of factors that result in excellent service, and tips for managing difficult service interactions

Managing Conflicts – an examination of the pros and cons of conflict, ideas for anticipating problem situations and people, and ways to deal with conflict constructively

Business/Accounting Certificate Program

The Business/Accounting Certificate Program offers all full-time university employees an opportunity to earn a Business/Accounting Certificate or a Business/Accounting Supervisor Certificate. Employees should fulfill all program requirements within 18 months of completing their first course in order to receive certification. For more information go to this page.
