Using the Rutgers Editorial Style Guide

In developing ad copy, you should use the Rutgers Editorial Style Guide in writing your posting. This ensures consistency in projecting the university’s image.

The guide lists common terms used in job postings and their correct spelling or usage:

Campuses

The word “campus” should be capitalized:

Busch Campus
Camden Campus
College Avenue Campus
Douglass Campus
Livingston Campus
Newark Campus
New Brunswick Campus

The official titles of the three regional campuses follow the same format:

Rutgers–Camden
Rutgers–Newark
Rutgers–New Brunswick (not Rutgers–New Brunswick/Piscataway)

School Names

School names do not include “The” (capital “T”) as part of their names. You may, when appropriate, use “the” (lowercase “t”) to precede the name of some of the schools in text.

Capitalizations

Academic Degrees

The preferred style is to spell out all degrees: bachelor’s degree instead of B.A. or B.S., master’s degree instead of M.A. or M.S., doctoral degree instead of Ph.D. Use either doctorate or doctoral degree, never doctorate degree.
