Alternate Benefit Program (ABP) Life Insurance

Active Employees

Coverage Amount

Three and one-half (3½) times 10- or 12-month base salary* up to the IRS compensation limit under IRC 401(a)(17). No medical examination is required unless the member has attained the age of 60 prior to enrollment.

*Base salary means the base salary upon which contributions by the individual and his/her employer to the Alternate Benefit Program are based during the last year of creditable service. However, in the event of death during the first year of participation in an Alternate Benefit Program as a result of an accident met in the actual performance of duty at some definite time and place, the death benefit shall be computed at the annual rate of base salary.

NOTE: This compensation limit does not apply to those who are grandfathered under PL 1997, Ch 113.

Changing Beneficiary

Conversion

Terminated employees may continue life insurance without a medical exam by purchasing a conversion life insurance policy through Prudential within 31 days of termination. Retired Employees

You must retire at age 60 or above with 10 or more years of ABP pension credit for coverage.

Coverage Amount

Upon retirement, benefit reduces to ½ times annual base salary.

Conversion

Retirees may purchase a conversion life insurance policy through Prudential without a medical exam within 31 days of retirement (to make up for insurance that has been reduced or eliminated).
