As a result of recently-approved contract negotiations between Rutgers University and legacy UMDNJ staff negotiating units, as well as the ongoing effort to align policies, calendars and work rules related to the integration between Rutgers and the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the following information applies to Rutgers legacy UMDNJ aligned (unionized) and non-aligned (non-union) staff employees.

For additional clarification, please visit the legacy UMDNJ holiday policy. For information regarding legacy Rutgers employees, visit the Holiday Schedule webpage for University Holidays for legacy Rutgers employees, or the Personal Holiday webpage for information regarding the personal holiday (PH) policy.

Paid Time Off Calendar

For the purposes of paid time off, legacy UMDNJ staff employees now follow the university's fiscal year calendar, rather than calendar year.  Time will still be accrued on a monthly basis, pursuant to university policy and negotiated agreements, but time in excess of the one-year carry-forward cap must be used by June 30 of each year (the end of the fiscal year), rather than December 31.

University Holidays

The regular university holidays for legacy UMDNJ staff employees are:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Note: When a holiday falls on Saturday it is usually observed the Friday before; when a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is usually observed the following Monday.

Float Holidays

In order to remain consistent with legacy Rutgers policies and negotiated agreements, the guidelines below should be followed for legacy UMDNJ staff employees:

  • Of the paid floating holidays afforded to employees, the university will designate four of these annually as mandatory paid floating holidays (usually designated for the end of the winter holiday season)
  • The university may designate which facilities or work units that provide essential services will not be closed during the observation of mandatory paid floating holidays.  Employees who provide essential services to the university will have an opportunity to take their float holidays at a different time during the year
  • Float holidays are not cumulative and must be used prior to the end of the fiscal year, or forfeited
  • Float Holidays are not eligible for payout upon separation from the university
  • To be consistent with existing Rutgers University's legacy UMDNJ policy, employees will receive three additional paid floating holidays, in accordance with Rutgers Policy 60.9.12
  • For aligned (unionized) employees -- Requests to use single paid floating holidays and single paid personal days that are made with at least five work days’ notice in advance, and requests to use consecutive paid floating holidays or paid personal days that are made within 45 calendar days’ notice in advance, shall not be denied.

Guidelines for legacy UMDNJ Faculty Positions

Because paid time off, university holidays and float holidays are all negotiated benefits, the following stipulations pertain to legacy UMDNJ faculty members:

  • Employees in the legacy UMDNJ faculty bargaining units observe the regular University staff holiday calendar.
  • Float Holidays for legacy UMDNJ faculty members:
    • Legacy UMDNJ faculty members receive four (4) float holidays per fiscal year. Float holidays may be used at any time during the fiscal year, but must be used by June 30th or they are automatically forfeited.
    • Less than half-time and other non-union faculty and Faculty Administrators receive no float holidays.
    • Unused float holidays are not paid out upon separation from the University.
