FAQs
For Learners
- What is You Can Lead and who’s eligible to participate?
-
You Can Lead is OneRED’s Emerging Leadership Development Program, which targets the furtherance of leadership competencies in the next generation of OneRED Leaders.
Eligibility: Leaders who have responsibility over teams; Grade 6 and above or Rutgers Health equivalent; eligibility is subject to change with insights gained throughout the pilot.
- What is blended learning?
-
Development is ongoing and occurs through key experiences – that means it is our philosophy that learning happens all the time. To curate leadership development seamlessly into your everyday, You Can Lead is built with a blended learning approach: it combines self-paced microlearnings (15-minute courses) with practical application activities, live senior leadership conversations with peer mentorship opportunities, and programmatic manager coaching with graduated advancement of one’s development goals.
- Eight weeks seems like a long time – what is expected of me?
-
We estimate that the time commitment should be no more than 5-10% across the duration of your time in the program. With four modules across eight weeks, we recommend structuring into four two-week modules—one “learning” week and one “application” week – but the choice is yours!
You Can Lead features one scheduled touchpoint for each module: the kick-off (5 hours) and three virtual leader chats (90 minutes each). Beyond these scheduled touchpoints, we are proud that this program has built-in flexibility, recognizing that the demands of a new manager are ever changing.
- How do I access the weekly modules and activities?
-
Log into Canvas and open the “You Can Lead” course shell. There, you will find each week’s eWorkouts, missions, Leader Chat links, and resources under the retrospective modules. If you don’t see the course, accept your Canvas orientation invitation or contact canvas-help@rutgers.edu.
For Managers
- How do I nominate my team member for You Can Lead?
-
Though space is limited, You Can Lead is offered quarterly throughout its pilot period. We are eager to connect your emerging leaders to this opportunity. To nominate an employee for consideration in a future cohort, please contact oneredleadership@hr.rutgers.edu.
- What’s my role in supporting my learner?
-
As total talent developers, managers play a critical role in developing their team members. Support does not have to be complicated, and it is our goal to equip you with the tools necessary to provide that support to your learner. At minimum, we recommend you ensure learners have adequate time to complete their learning activities; complete pre- and post-program assessments to debrief development opportunities and observed behavior change; and utilize coaching questions shared biweekly to guide reflection and real-world application of learning.
- How can I encourage the application of new skills?
-
Invite your learner to practice what they’re learning in real situations: delegate a task using dynamic delegation principles, give solution-focused feedback in meetings, or involve them in strategic planning. Then discuss the outcomes in your next 1:1.
