What is eldercare?

Elder care consists of many different issues. Aging adults are faced with unique decisions and challenges, ranging from choosing the appropriate health care insurance and providers, choosing from an array of living arrangement choices, and understanding various retirement options and choices. Family members are often involved in assisting an elderly individual with these choices.

What related benefits are available to me as a Rutgers University employee?

The Unreimbursed Dependent Care Spending Account is a voluntary program that allows full-time employees to set aside pretax dollars for care of eligible dependents, which include those incapable of self-care and qualify as a dependent of the employee. More information can be found on the Tax$ave benefit page.

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program offers a variety of counseling and referral services that are available to employees as well as their family members.

Rutgers employees also have access to the Employee Wellness Program website, which is a gateway to programs, services, and benefits that can help improve overall quality of life.

Where can I go online for additional information on elder care, aging, retirement, etc.?

AARP - Organization that offers members age 50+ a wealth of information, tools, and services.

BenefitsCheckup.org - A service that assists older people to search for public and private local programs that provide assistant and services.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - Federal organization responsible for overseeing the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Department of Veterans Affairs - Assists veterans with programs such as patient care and veteran benefits.

Middlesex County Department of Human Services - Office on Aging - Offers a variety of services for Middlesex residents such as legal assistance, outreach, transportation services, and other support services.

National Council on Aging - Offers programs, publications, and services to help older people remain healthy and independent. 

Senior Citizens' Resources - Provides valuable official information and services from the U.S. government concerning senior citizens resources.

Social Security Administration - Government agency that provides programs and services involving retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to workers and their families and administers the Supplemental Social Security Income program.

State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services - Administers programs designed to make it easier for seniors to get the help they need to support their well-being and to maintain themselves in the community.

United States Administration on Aging - Agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that develops affordable long-term care options and programs for elderly individuals.

United States National Institute on Aging - Provides leadership in aging research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs relevant to aging and older people.  Offers many free informative publications.
