Unit Computing Specialist - Grade 4

Position Summary

This level position is often involved with the daily administration of a server(s) and/or in the support of desktop operating systems and software. This position frequently works under technical supervision except for those small departments where the position may be the sole technical resource. Many are involved with the development of web pages, databases, spreadsheets, and/or reports of low to moderate complexity. Performs analytical, technical and administrative work to plan, design, and install networked and stand-alone computer systems for public user rooms, computer classrooms, offices, etc. Analyzes user needs and evaluates new products; recommends hardware and software purchases. Installs and troubleshoots software and hardware. Provides telephone and on-site support.

Provides technical support, assistance, and consultation to students, faculty, staff, and/or lower-level consultants. Collaborates with other units to improve access to and maximize use of computing resources. Develops documentation, user procedures, and security procedures. Position Summary

This level position administers a large set of PC’s for a department, normally with responsibility for one or more servers. The scope of responsibility may include application support and developing web applications of moderate complexity. May supervise lower level technical staff and is usually responsible for resource planning for departmental computing.

Provides specialized, technical end user support and assistance and advice in the use of computer hardware, software, and networks to faculty, students, and staff. Provides consulting services in specialized areas such as specialized software, data access/analysis, and academic research. Provides support for specialized software/data installation, configuration and planning. Investigates and analyzes various specialized computing options and solutions. Seeks opportunities to integrate specialized area into scholarly activities, collaborating with faculty on incorporating specialized software and methods.

In large environments this level may also have significant managerial and technology planning responsibilities.

Provides specialized, technical end-user support, and assistance and advice in the use of computer hardware, software, and networks to faculty, students, and staff. May supervise related staff and consultants. Provides leadership in the provision of long term, expert consulting and growth planning services in specialized computing areas. Researches and investigates various specialized computing options and solutions. Analyzes industry trends. Coordinates support activities including specialized software installation and configuration. Seeks opportunities to integrate specialized area into scholarly activities, collaborating with faculty on incorporating specialized software and methods. Directly supervises all assigned subordinate staff. Plans, designs, and conducts specialized end user training for groups or individuals. Maintains knowledge in new developments and technologies, particularly in specialized area; recommends and implements, as appropriate, for universitywide usage. Tests new specialized software. Position Summary

This entry level position is involved with the daily administration of a server and/or server-based services. These positions typically work under technical supervision and do not have final responsibility for the server or service. Under supervision, may be responsible for some amount of development; e.g., scripts to automate tasks, web systems with a database backend. Maintains, administers, and upgrades systems and software according to departmental objectives. Reviews system programs for adherence to established policy and to ensure thoroughness and quality. Position summary

Position Summary

The combination of tasks at this level is typically more managerial than technical and usually involves the direct supervision of several technical staff. Position Summary

This entry-level position is involved with the daily administration of telecommunications equipment and services. These positions work under technical supervision and are responsible for the least complex hardware and network systems. Under direct supervision, assists higher level communications analysts or managers in the planning, design, and implementation of communications networks. Responsible for providing assistance and technical support for network design activities. Assists in the review/assessment of user needs. Position Summary

This level position is responsible for straightforward implementation of telecommunications systems from common guidelines. Installs, maintains, and repairs network systems and related hardware. May be responsible for development of monitoring and installation processes. Works with limited independence exercising decision making in project plans and day-to-day operations pertaining to network activities following the guidelines set by management. May do more complex tasks under supervision. Maintains the university RUNet infrastructure by daily monitoring of electronics and analysis of system logs for faults. Investigates and resolves network problems using both hardware and software tools; responds to user problem reports; troubleshoots complex protocol problems. Configures a variety of networking electronics and software, including switches, for network expansion and/or modification projects. Participates in the requirements analysis for hardware, systems and local area networks. Assists in system and network changes using good engineering practices. Prepares and maintains regular and accurate documentation of work completed, equipment changes, software changes, network connections and network status. Prepares reports as requested by management. May assist in developing and conducting training sessions.

Telecommunications Analyst - Grade 6

Position Summary

This level position will normally involve a larger, more complex environment than is required in the typical department. Although still using technology and methods that are common, this level will be involved in more network design and/or development of processes. Works independently with limited oversight, exercising decision making in project plans and day-to-day operations pertaining to network activities following the guidelines set by management. Responsible for technical support of Local Area Network (LAN) systems, network operating systems, and internetworking devices. Uses comprehensive knowledge of operating systems and networking to assist departmental staff with networking related security assignments, problem diagnosis and resolution. Conducts networking monitoring of security log files and log analysis. Provides network programming, design, maintenance services and scripting. Identifies and develops new network services, practices and policies. Participates in the development of design standards and reference models. Plans, coordinates and executes complex technology implementations. Identifies and obtains resources necessary to complete long term projects. Successfully manages personal and group projects to completion. May supervise lower level telecommunications analysts. Investigates and recommends new technologies for use on RUNet. Develops and conducts training and provides documentation on complex technologies. Other tasks may include firewall installations, security design and planning, and recommending and maintaining management software and applications.

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of problem resolution techniques for internetworking systems and LAN operating systems, have the ability to correctly identify and diagnose common networking and LAN operating system problems, and document and implement appropriate resolution techniques. Telecommunications Analyst - Grade 7

Position Summary

This level position is usually responsible for more complex services, integration of technologies, and new approaches to solve technical problems. Plans and implements complex hardware and software projects that require significant expertise. Works with independence under broad oversight exercising decision making in day-to-day operations pertaining to network activities following the guidelines set by management. Provides leadership and oversight for ongoing networking development projects which entail the identification, development, recommendation and adoption of new network technologies. Investigates and resolves network problems using both hardware and software tools. Troubleshoots complex network problems and responds to user problem reports. Assists in system and network changes using good engineering practices. Develops standards, practices, documentation, and training. Identifies and prototypes technologies and management practices beneficial to RUNet, Rutgers Regional Network and the university community. Analyzes and synthesizes information from industry, academic, and technical sources in consideration of their applicability to current enterprise management standards and practices. Analyzes applicable trends in the networking industry and provides recommendations to management. Prepares and maintains accurate and regular documentation of work completed, equipment changes, software changes, network connections and network status. Supervises lower level telecommunications analysts. May serve as primary backup to manager of Network Architecture for complex routing, external connectivity and technology management issues.

This level position is usually responsible for creating/developing new technology and being innovative in the use of technology. Is responsible for extremely large implementations of complex hardware and software projects that require significant expertise. Works independently with limited oversight exercising decision making in project plans and day-to-day operations pertaining to network activities following the guidelines set by management. Assists in the overall universitywide responsibility for the wide-area data backbone network and the interconnection of departmental level local area networks on all campuses. Provides systemwide planning and design, policy recommendations, and technical/economic evaluation of new and existing network offerings. Maintains the wide-area backbone network by daily monitoring of electronics and analysis of system logs for faults. Designs and configures a variety of networking electronics and software, including routers and switches for network expansion and/or modification projects. Evaluates new technologies, network security hardware, software and management tools, and plans for their integration into the network. Investigates and resolves complex network problems using both hardware and software tools. Troubleshoots complex protocol problems and responds to user problem reports. Maintains both broad and specific knowledge and expertise of the telecommunications and computing fields in both academic and administrative computing environments sufficient to advise staff and others within the university and plan for future network needs. Leads in system and network changes using good engineering practices. Prepares and maintains regular and accurate documentation of work completed, equipment changes, network connections, and network status. Supervises lower level telecommunications analysts.

Instructional Technologists

Instructional Support Specialist - Grade 3

Position Summary

This entry level position works under supervision and provides day-to-day support in the use of instructional IT services. Primarily responsible for maintaining, installing, and troubleshooting instructional hardware and software. Activities include the set up, upgrade, and minor repair of personal computers, the installation of software, minor repair of audio-visual equipment, and the installation of peripherals and projection devices. Assists faculty in the use of instructional classroom equipment, operations and training over the telephone, email, and in-person. Responds to inquiries from end-users having problems using software and equipment. Diagnosis problems using written procedures and resolves problems or provides timely notification of problem details to supervisor for resolution. Acts as a user advocate to resolve problems working within the defined support structure. Writes and updates standard troubleshooting procedures for review by supervisor. Has an in-depth theoretical understanding of learning theories, instructional theories and their applications in higher education. Activities can include advising in the design and development of curriculum materials; creating new instructional software; facilitating meetings with faculty groups and/or project teams about improving curriculum, instruction, and learning through the use of instructional technology; introducing new teaching techniques and technologies; designing and developing faculty training programs, multimedia courseware, and distance learning applications; leading instructional designers in courseware design and development teams; participating in setting policies regarding acquisition, installation, licensing, and maintenance of hardware and software; conducting research on trends and best practices and adapting to client’s needs; seeking and soliciting funding opportunities for instructional initiatives; authoring articles for university and professional publications on ground-breaking initiatives and strategies; and leading and/or serving on various campus committees.
